Carlos EdwardsCarlos Edwards started the Amsterdam Tournament with a bang after he was forced out of the Benfica game due to a head injury.

Winger Carlos Edwards is sporting a sore head this evening after he was forced out of the 2-0 defeat to Benfica at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Trinidad & Tobago international came off worst in a challenge for the ball in front of the dug-outs 26 minutes in, sustaining a nasty gash on his head.

Edwards was helped off immediately and taken to the dressing room, where club medical staff inserted five stitches to close the wound.

He will be monitored carefully in training before a decision is made on his availability ahead of the game against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

"Carlos went off and had stitches but he'll be fine," manager Steve Bruce added.

Midfielder Carlos Edwards was back in action this morning in Amsterdam following a nasty head injury yesterday.

Sunderland's Carlos Edwards was back training as normal at the club's Amsterdam training HQ this morning.

Edwards, 30, came through the full session after having five stitches inserted into a head wound during last night's 2-0 defeat to Benfica.

The winger came off worst in a clash with an opponent while battling for the ball in front of the dugouts and was substituted after only 26 minutes.

But he showed no ill effects this morning as the squad split into two groups as part of preparations for tomorrow's clash with Atletico Madrid.

The group who started last night's game were a handed a slightly more low-key session, while those who didn't trained as normal.

Boss Steve Bruce has handed his squad a rare afternoon off following more than a week of solid training-ground work.
