Jason DevenishDarren Mackay from victoriahighlandersfc.com sat down with Jason Devenish, the central midfielder who has been turning heads with some strong performances this season.

Where are you from?
Trinidad and Tobago but I just graduated from the University of South Florida, so I have been living there the last four years.

What brought you to play football for the Highlanders this summer?
My best friend from Trinidad lives out here and did some marketing for the club and told me about the team so I decided to do some travelling and come out here and see Victoria.

How have you enjoyed your time with the club?
It has been an amazing experience, Just being in Victoria has been fantastic and playing with this bunch of guys has been a lot of fun. I have made great friends and have enjoyed playing football with them.

Do you have a nickname?
Not really

Who is your favorite player and team?
My favorite player has always been Francesco Totti but my favorite team is Real Madrid. They haven’t been doing great but soon the good years will return!!!

Strength and Weaknesses on the pitch?
I think my strengths would be  my ball control and creativity; I like to try different things and make things happen. I think my weaknesses would be defending probably but I have trying to get better at it because it is very important for the team.

Biggest Influence in your soccer career?
Probably my coach from Trinidad, Dion La Foucade. He coached me since I was about 8 years old and I have learnt many things about soccer and life thanks to him.

Best goal you have ever scored? Most memorable moment on the pitch?
The best goal I have ever scored was probably in high school; I scored a free kick in the last few minutes to beat one of our tougher opponents. Although my most memorable moment was winning the Big East Conference with USF in my senior year of college, it was really amazing to win the conference in my senior year.

Favorite Sport (other than soccer)
I love to wakeboard or surf - being from the Caribbean it’s something we do all the time back home and I kind of miss it.

Favorite movie? TV show? Music?
Favorite movie would have to be Fight club, TV show is Family Guy and my Favorite music is definitely Reggae, nothing beats it.

Any pre-match rituals that you go through?
Before games I have to listen to music, it just relaxes me and gets me in the right frame of mind.

What have you learned from the coaches this season?

I have learnt a lot, mostly about what is expected at the next level and the thing that you have to do to get there. Also every coach plays a different style and a different system and I have learnt a lot about this system and the style of play that is expected.

What are you looking to get out of this season as a Highlander?
I honestly want to play at the next level. I think I am still young and I really want to use this season as a stepping stone to get to the next level and go on to play professionally somewhere.

Best advice you have been given as a player?
Do that little bit of extra work on your own everyday and you will see results, and to stay humble.

What advice could you give to the young players who love this sport?
Probably to do more than just come to practice, you should be playing and practicing by yourself everyday at home or wherever if you really want to reach the next level.

Describe yourself in five words:
Laid Back, Determined, Fun, Ambitious, Easy Going

In five years time where do you see yourself?

Playing professionally in the Spanish or Italian league. Or just playing  professionally somewhere.
