Veteran goalkeeper Clayton Ince reckons rival Rene Gilmartin is ready to become Walsall’s No 1 – even if it is at his expense.
But Ince should feature in the reserves game at home to Derby tonight (7pm) as he battles to regain his place.
The 37-year-old said: “Rene’s been showing it. His confidence is getting there. He’s starting so it gives him a bit of a boost.
“I’ve been playing so many games, but now he’s starting so it gives him a bit of a boost.
“It gives the gaffer a selection headache because he has two good goalkeepers. He can put him in any time and know Rene can perform, so it’s good for the team.
“It makes it even better for me and Rene because we must keep high standards. I don’t mind having a fight for it – that’s what football is all about.”
The pair have both played five games this season and, despite glowing praise for his rival, Ince wants his place back.
He said: “The gaffer makes the decision, whether Rene is doing well or not, sometimes it could be tactical or whatever.
“Rene knows I’m supporting him all the way. We both have to work hard.”
