Roberto Martinez was left wondering what could have been as Wigan came away with nothing after being defeated 2-1 by Liverpool at Anfield.
The Latics found themselves a goal down inside ten minutes but had a great chance to equalise when substitute Jason Scotland hit the crossbar just minutes before the Reds went ahead 2-0 through Fernando Torres.

Martinez believes this was the crucial moment in the match and if Scotland’s shot had have gone in, the whole dynamic of the contest would have changed.

"The key moment is when Jason Scotland hit the crossbar. If that had gone in it would have been a completely different game as you could see the anxiety around the ground,” he said.

"We gave them a little bit too much respect and space in spells and the concentration was not what it should be.

"Liverpool got their chances and took them; we got ours and didn't."

The Spaniard admitted he was unsure what to feel after the match as he believed his team were good enough in patches but the overall performance was not where it should have been.

"I have mixed feelings. The first goal is really soft for our standards, it was a lapse in concentration," he added.

"When you come to places like Anfield if you do that you are going to make things very difficult for yourself.

"After that I was pleased with the reaction and slowly we created a few chances.”
