Saints Trinidad and Tobago international Kenwyne Jones announced his arrival on the Clubs goalscoring charts in distinctive style last night after he bagged their second in the Reserves' 2-2 draw with Fulham.
Having coolly dinked his finish past the visitors' goalkeeper Ross Flitney after running on Dexter Blackstocks clever through ball the six foot two front man headed straight to the corner flag to celebrate. Getting down on all fours Jones then cocked his leg at the flag-post to perform one of the most surreal goal celebrations seen at Staplewood in recent years.
After the match he beamed: That was me marking my territory and signalling my entrance in my own special way!
It
was great to score and it gave me that little bit more confidence so I
am looking forward to bigger things in the future. It was a great ball
from Dexter and I would like to think it was a decent finish as well so
hopefully I can do it again soon.
Since his arrival in the summer, Jones has featured in a variety of positions for Saints second string, lining up in central midfield on his debut against Eastleigh in pre-season, centre-half last week and centre-forward last night.
And
although the 20 year old said he is happy to step in anywhere, the pacy
utility man who is already gaining a reputation as one of the most
athletic players at the club admitted he was starting to develop a
taste for life up front.
He continued: I can do it all I am just like the international man of mystery! I
have done that for Saints and I have done that for Trinidad as well
where I am more of a Mr fixit. To be honest though, I do prefer to play
on top most of the time because it is always nice to get goals. That
feeling when you score is always special. And having got off the
mark in front of Saints new boss Harry Redknapp last night, Jones
added that he now has his sights set on his Premiership debut. He
summed up: It has been a bit tough going back and fourth to play
internationals since I came here but I think so far it has gone quite
well and over the next few months I hope it will get even better. I
really love it here. It is not that cold and it is friendly here so I
am settling in quite well and I am enjoying things at the club. We
have got a new manager now so you start from scratch again and that is
the same for everybody. I havent really had a chance to speak to him
yet and this was probably the first game that he saw me play but after
this, who knows what can happen. I could be far away and I could
be very near, I will just have to keep on working hard for my chance. I
am not saying that it should happen right now but I would like to get a
few games in the Premiership before the end of the season so I can get
a feeling for what it is and have something to build on.
You can try and pin me down to one position but I dont think it will happen and basically I am well rounded in all positions.
