The home of a Premier League footballer was searched by police after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted at a party, sources confirmed today.

The 30-year-old woman alleges the assault took place on Saturday evening at the Cheshire home of Bolton's Jlloyd Samuel.

The alleged victim has given police a statement and the defender's home in Lymm was searched by forensics officers earlier this week.

The 29-year-old Trinidad and Tobago star did not play for Bolton in their goalless draw against Fulham on Saturday.

Today, Cheshire Police said a man had been arrested.

A spokesman said: "On Tuesday, a 30-year-old woman contacted police to report that she had been sexually assaulted while attending a party at a house in Lymm on Saturday.

"Shortly after lunchtime today, police arrested a 28-year-old man from the Nottingham area, who is currently assisting police with their inquiries at a Cheshire custody suite."

It is understood the suspect, who is not believed to be a Premier League footballer, met detectives by prior arrangement with police.

A Bolton Wanderers club spokesman declined to comment but stressed the allegations in no way involved Mr Samuel.

The player spent nine seasons at Aston Villa, making nearly 200 appearances for the Midlands club, before his switch to the Reebok Stadium.
