Dundee FC Online spoke to Brent Sancho outside Tannadice after the derby, The central defender is off to the Caribbean today for some World Cup action but he spoke to us first about events in the city clash.

“It’s a great result in the position we’re in, we maintain our advantage over them, I thought we played really well today, we gave away two sloppy, or soft, goals, but other than that I thought we did really well. We fought well and fought really hard too.

Dundee of course were behind twice but the prospect didn‘t worry the players, they were confident of coming back to get a result as Sancho explained “There’s a lot of team spirit in our dressing room right now, a lot of fighting ability. The team realise that we’re disappointed at where we are in the table and we know that we can do a lot better. We’re beginning to get a lot more players healthy, we’re beginning to get a full squad to choose from and we believe in ourselves. The fans seem to have belief in us as well in recent weeks, the support they gave us when we were behind was tremendous and helped us get back into the game.

“Our record in derbies is great but we have to put that aside and we did that today, we knew this was a totally different game, every time we play them it’s a new game. I thought United did pretty well so it’s a totally different battle.”

Lee Wilkie‘s injury wouldn‘t have helped a player who has barely trained in a month and missed the last two games through injury but Brent was full of praise for Bobby Mann who turned in a tremendous second half performance replacing big Lee “Bobby’s been doing well in training so we knew he could take over from Lee, but it was worrying when he went down, it’s important that we stay healthy and have a deep squad, a good bench so that anyone can come on and do a job for us right now, that’s a key thing, it helps us survive and start climbing the league.

“When he went down it struck me as a recurring nightmare, I was there the first time he got injured and credit to Lee, he’s worked hard to get back to fitness. It’s unfortunate that he seems to be unlucky in derbies, but having said that Bobby came on and did tremendously well.

Brent is confident that Dundee can pull away from the relegation zone, it‘s a process that has already started in recent weeks and he believes it will continue “We have a very good squad and we’ve started to get a full squad to pick from, we need to start climbing the right way up the table. It’s embarrassing when you look at where we are in the table, with the talent we have in the dressing room we should be further up the league, we know that as a team. We need to keep fighting and get ourselves up the league.”

On the International front Brent is likely to face Haiti in a warm up game this Wednesday before being involved as Trinidad and Tobago take on the USA a week on Wednesday in the World Cup, it’s the Soca Warriors first match in the final qualifying group and they will want to get off to a good start as they bid for a place in Germany 2006. As Brent told us “We’ve got Dwight Yorke back for these games, and that will give us a boost” we want to get off to a flier, “You never know I might manage to get him to come up here and play for us” he laughed.
