TRANMERE’S Tony Warner has sent a big thank you to his former employers at Liverpool for the gesture that helped to revive his stalled career with a move to Prenton Park this month.

The well travelled goalkeeper was without a club after fulfilling a couple of short-term assignments with Leeds United and Scunthorpe this season.

But Liverpool invited him to train in the professional environment at Melwood, which meant the 36-year-old was in good shape and ready for action when Tranmere came calling in the January transfer window.

He signed a contract that runs until the end of the season.

Warner said: “Liverpool were good to me. Roy Hodgson, who was the manager at the time, said I could train with them while I was without a club. Lots of people at Liverpool supported me and it’s helped me get the move to Tranmere. I would like to thank them. I could not have got that move without their help.

“I’m very happy to come to Tranmere and hope it’s going to work well for both parties.”

Liverpool-born Warner has enjoyed a nomadic career since leaving Anfield in 1999, playing short spells at more than a dozen English and Scottish clubs. He built up more than two thirds of his 337 career games in five years at Millwall between 1999 and 2004. He played two games for Scunthorpe in the Championship during October, prior to fixing up a permanent move to Prenton Park.
