Former Adelphi University goalkeeper Thorne Holder signed an MLS contract with the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday, the college announced.
Holder was invited on a month long tryout with the club, traveling to Orlando in January for the Union's pre-season camp.
Holder's trial with the Union was to run through Friday. He became the fifth Trinidad & Tobago player to sign a current contract with MLS.
"We are extremely proud and happy for Thorne," Adelphi coach Carlo Acquista said. "His hard work and dedication to the sport is helping him achieve one of his many goals.
I would like to personally thank John Urbom and Matt Metzger for their continuous work with Thorne. We wish him great success in Major League Soccer."
Holder played 45 minutes against the University of Central Florida on Sunday as he allowed no goals.
"My time at Adelphi was filled with excitement and achievement," Holder said. "Fortunately I was blessed with an encouraging coaching staff that was able to push me more than I could push myself," Holder said.
"I Had to have reconstructive surgery on my forehead after my first session in 2008, but recovered in three weeks and helped my team to a nine game win streak, my team never allowed me to give up. Adelphi is a fast growing program with great facilities."
He was invited for the tryout after three seasons with the Panthers. He earned two National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region honors and three All-Atlantic Soccer Conference selections. He also was named ASC Tournament co-defensive MVP along with teammate Mauricio Mora.
Holder is second in career shutouts with 19 and fourth in wins at 30. He also occupies three of the top six spots in season goals-against average posting numbers of 0.66 (third), 0.70 (fourth) and 0.77 (sixth).
Holder is the sixth former Adelphi player to be involved on the field with a MLS club, joining Gary Sullivan (Colorado Rapids) and former MLS all-star and U.S. National Team midfielder Chris Armas (Los Angeles Galaxy, Chicago Fire) as the best known.
