The Charlotte Eagles are pleased to announce the return of Darren Toby for the 2011 USL PRO season pending USSF approval.
"We are excited about signing Darren Toby for the 2011 season," Eagles Head Coach Mark Steffens said. "He is a key player on both sides of the ball for us. His extremely high possession rate makes him a valuable asset in our attack. We expect another great season from Darren."
Toby, a native of Trinidad & Tobago, was chosen as MVP of both St. Clair's Coaching School and the Tobago Futbol League in 2001, playing on the U-23 Trinidad & Tobago National Team before relocating to the United States in 2003. He was named an NAIA Third Team All-American at the University of Mobile in 2003 before transferring to the College of Charleston, where he finished his college career.
Undrafted out of college, Toby was signed to a single-year deal by Charlotte and made his professional debut on April 19, 2008, in the Eagles' USL Second Division season opener against the Bermuda Hogges. Instantly, Toby earned his way into the starting line-up, becoming a vital part in helping the Eagles claim the 2008 USL-2 Regular Season Title. In 2010, Toby was a Second Team All-League selection.
2011 will mark Toby's fourth season with the Eagles. He continues to play a central role in the Eagles midfield with unique technical ability that is hard to match.
