Jake Thomson (in red)WINGER Jake Thomson is eyeing a return to Cheltenham Town following his release from Exeter City.

The Portsmouth-based 22-year-old spent time on loan with the Robins last season, making five appearances during February and March.

He scored in the important 2-1 home win over Stockport County.

Thomson was on the comeback trail from a knee ligament injury and was disappointed with his own performances for Cheltenham.

He is now keen for a chance to show what he can do on a permanent basis after enjoying his temporary spell in Gloucestershire.

Robins boss Mark Yates wants to add a winger to his squad ahead of the new season and the jet-heeled Thomson could fit the bill.

"I have not spoken to Mark Yates myself, but he has been in contact with my agent and Cheltenham would be my preferred move," Thomson said.

"When I was on loan there, I enjoyed working with the gaffer, but I was only about 80 per cent fit, if that.

"I was not able to play how I normally play and it was disappointing because the player the Cheltenham fans saw was not really me."

Thomson has an impressive pedigree, having progressed through the youth system at Southampton along with the likes of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, with whom he has remained close friends.

He has represented England at Under-17 level and has also won full caps for the Trinidad and Tobago national team.

It was during a loan spell with Torquay United that Thomson caught Yates' eye, scoring once and causing Cheltenham all kinds of problems in a 3-0 win for the Gulls in December 2009.

After leaving Southampton, Thomson joined Exeter City, for whom he made one start and 15 substitute appearances in League One last season.

After returning to the Devon club after his spell at Cheltenham, Thomson felt like he was returning to full fitness.

"I came on a few times and helped changed some games, feeling much fitter," Thomson said.

"I had wanted to stay at Cheltenham for longer, but I had to go back to Exeter due to finances.

"I am now hoping to get something sorted out soon and Cheltenham would be my preferred option."
