Former national captain and Futsal coach Clayton Morris is encouraging skill development and teamwork by teaching inmates about Futsal at the Maximum State Prison in Arouca twice per week.
Though the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, he is involved in a Futsal coaching programme at the Maximum State Prison on Mondays and Thursdays of each week.
“What we do is go in there and reach out to these individuals who have suffered consequences because of a life of crime. But we are working with them, teaching them about building team spirit and friendship, teach them futsal, refereeing and coaching and it is amazing to see the response among guys who might have been warring against each other previously. We have noticed improvements and seeing humans being transformed before our eyes which is a joy to experience,” Morris said.
Morris enjoys coaching the inmates just as much as working with students at UTT. He is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the (UTT) programme made reference to several players who have come through the Secondary Schools Football League and have gone on to play for UTT and graduate with degrees.
“There are endless opportunities through the SSFL and also for players who continue to go outside to expand their education and their football both at colleges abroad and locally at institutes such as UTT.
Similarly we can have a positive effect on the inmates by showing them how they can turn things around using football or futsal,” he said.
