The Futsal Association of T&T (FATT) is set to host its first National Women's Futsal Tournament on July 7 at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.
Ten teams will do battle for the bragging rights, preparation ahead of this season and a whopping $10,000 in cash prizes.
FATT president Geoffrey Edwards said in a release yesterday the tournament was conceptualised from the country's historic representation at the third Summer Youth Olympics last October in Buenos Aires, Argentina at which the team performed with credit but was ousted at the group stage.
"After a historic representation at the 3rd Summer Youth Olympics, last October in Buenos Aires, Argentina, FATT decided to make female inclusivity one of five pillars in its Strategic Plan or 2019 to 2024. In our effort to drive participation amongst the female footballing population to this exciting variant, we decided to explore many mechanisms, beginning with the hosting of a national competition,” Edwards said.
"There are many more plans to ensure this pillar is strengthened and upholds the values of the house of local futsal."
The event is open for females of all ages and the winner will walk away with a cheque for $7,000 and a trophy, and the runner-up $3,000. There will also be prizes for the 'Most Valuable Player" (MVP), "Most Goals" and "Best Goal Keeper". It will be entirely free to the public.
Registration is underway at a cost of $1,000 per team, and each club, academy and school will be allowed to register a maximum of two teams. It will be governed strictly by FIFA’s futsal rules and regulations and will be officiated by futsal certified referees.
To register teams are asked to contact futsal officials at (471-6316), send info to (futsaltt@gmail.com) or on Facebook and Instagram (@Futsal868).
