Mexico and the host Costa Rica opened the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with victories against Trinidad & Tobago and Surinam, respectively at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica on Friday evening.


Midfielder Jesus Contreras scored twice, while defenders Victor Huerta, Arturo Lopez, midfielders Alberto Montiel and Miguel Ángel Olvera each added a goal for Mexico (1-0-0, 3 Points) in the 6:4 Group A victory over Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points). The soca warriors offence was led by forward Jerwyn Balthazar with two goals, while defender Anthony Small and midfielder Ako James each had a tally in the loss.
