Kevin Peters pumped in two goals and fired hosts Trinidad and Tobago to a 5-0 win over Guyana in the final of the first-ever Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Hindu Credit Union-sponsored Futsal tournament on Friday night.
More than 1,300 spectators watched Trinidad and Tobago easily topple the Guyanese in the final held at the University of the West Indies Sports Complex in St Augustine. Ako James, Colin Joseph and Marvin Lee added to the goals by Peters, for the Soca Warriors to collect another jewel in their impressive list of Caribbean honours.
Peters, who was outsanding throughout the week-long tournament was adjudged Most Valuable Player before a packed and appreciative audience. T&T are the most successful team in Caribbean Cup football, winning eight of the 11 tournaments played.
In the Futsal third-place match, Suriname claimed the final CFU spot to the CONCACAF finals when they ran past Netherlands Antilles 9-4. Three goals by Winston Feller and two each from C. Sama-an and Roberto Zebeda propelled Suriname's effort.
Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname will join three qualifiers from the North/Central Preliminary Series, along with Cuba and hosts Costa Rica, in the eight-team CONCACAF Final Round.
The CONCACAF event will qualify two nations from the confederation to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Chinese Taipei from November 22 to December 12. Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of football and played with five-man teams on a basketball-style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball.
