The great St. Benedict College team of La Romain, which dominated collegeís soccer in the 1960ís, owed its success to various sources. The main reason for the team's overall success was the quality of the players like Bobby Sookram.

Sookram would have made any college team between 1958-1970 when the competition was really tough. That he became a top national forward was no surprise to anyone who had watched the youngster while he was at school. He emerged from the fires of the St. Benedict team, developing then into a mighty force, to represent BP Palo Seco in the Southern Football League, and then the powerful Maple in the North. By 1963 Sookram was already to show his class in the national side and was selected in the Trinidad and Tobago team that visited Suriname. He was left on the bench for all the games so when he returned to Suriname a year later for a World Cup qualifying match he promptly made up for his absence before and scored the only goal for his team. He never looked back.

Between 1963-1969 Sookram played against more than ten other countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, Curacao, Martinique and Jamaica and several high quality clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea and Wolves all of England. As a goal scoring forward Sookram ranked in his time among the best. His goal scoring average of above 45 goals per season is fantastic starting with his remarkable 110 goals for Maple in three years. Bobby Sookram is one of the few to have scored five goals each in two football games - one against Providence in a POSFL game and another in an inter-league game against POSFL.
