National Under-20 winger Shaquille Nesbitt believes that his run in the 2012/2013 T&T Pro League season with new side Central FC has been a factor in his development over the past three months.
Nesbitt netted T&T’s second goal in Monday’s 2-0 win over Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-20 final round of World Cup qualifiers in Kingston, Jamaica. He has been a starter for Central FC and credits some of the knowledge being passed on by ex-Arsenal player Graham Rix.
“Playing in the Pro League has helped me a lot because I’ve been learning a lot from my coach. He comes with a lot of experience from England so I’m picking up bits from him in our training and I think I’ve been able to bring some of it to the U-20 team and hopefully I can keep on improving my game,” said Nesbitt, who hails from Tacarigua.
“We had a good start to the tournament against Puerto Rico and our aim is to win all three games and move onto the Concacaf round. I would love to play in a World Cup and this is good opportunity for us to be the third U-20 national team to play in a World Cup,” the 19-year-old added.
The former St Ann’s Rangers player believes the current T&T squad has all the components of a winning team.
“We slipped up in the previous round against Suriname but we have been learning from our mistakes and the chemistry is improving every time we are together. We know that we need to cut out the mistakes and raise our level of play and play well on a more consistent basis, if we are to get through the Concacaf stage.”
