BRENT SANCHO, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Central FC, was impressed by the turnout of teams at the Central FC/VF Ladies “Let’s Give Breast Cancer The Boot” all-female football charity tournament.
The day-long event was staged on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela Park, St Clair,
Sancho, in a telephone interview yesterday, described the event as “excellent, in the sense that we had great participation, not only from just the teams that came out - we had 12 or so women’s teams participating - but also in the sense that we were able to disseminate information as it relates to early testing.”
The former national footballer and ex-Sports Minister continued, “over the last five years of the tournament, we would have at least touched over 400 to 500 females, getting them information as it relates to early testing in the fight against cancer and, by extension, breast cancer.” He added, “The tournament was won this year by Queen’s Park (who) combined with a team called Step By Step. They played Brick House, (who) fielded several national team players, in the final,
From that perspective, it was a very good final. We were able to donate $10,000 to the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society,
“And, in the bragging rights game, (it) was won by OCM,” Sancho noted,
There was heavy rainfall on Sunday morning but most of the scheduled teams turned out in their numbers to participate for a worthy cause,
“One or two (teams) that were coming from deep South weren’t able to make it,” he lamented. “We had a team from the sister island that (was here). We already have interest from teams in Grenada and the UK for next year so I can see the tournament definitely expanding.” Sancho expressed his gratitude to the sponsors, including Republic Bank, Toyota and Money Gram as well as Member of Parliament (MP) for Oropouche East, Dr Roodal Moonilal, for their support,
As far as the team’s charitable approach is concerned, Sancho said that plans are afoot for the annual “Treat Her Like A Lady” event, which caters for women in unfortunate circumstances,
“(It) sees us having a fine evening of food and entertainment for the Rape Crisis Society, which we did last year and we’ll continue with this theme this year again,” said Sancho. “We’ll continue along that drive to show these women that men do know how to treat ladies, and that is the core concept of this. It’s (usually) on the first week of December.”
