DIRECTV North East Stars defender Glenton Wolfe picked up his club’s top award on Wednesday night during its Player of the Year 2010-2011 season dinner and awards function held at Woodford Café in Movie Towne, Port of Spain.
The 29 year-old Glenton, elder brother of teammate Anthony Wolfe, was also voted Players’ Choice Player of the Year to walk away the brightest star on the night with the top two awards.
Midfielder Marc Leslie who spent the later part of the 2010-2011 season on the injury list was voted Player of the Year runner-up.
Under 21 midfielder Jeromie Williams undoubtedly picked up the Young Player of the Year award and Kaydion Gabriel the runner-up.
Special awards included Guyanese midfielder Carey Harris for Community Player of the Year, attacking Vincentian midfielder Kendal Velox who was pulled out of retirement got the Fair Play award and midfielder Akiel Guevara got the award for Goal of the Season.
The 2010-2011 season wasn’t a bad one for the Stars on and off the pitch returning to the TT Pro League fold after missing the previous season following a decision by club President Darryl Mahabir.
The Sangre Grande based club finished seventh in the Digicel Pro League Championship with 27 points, just as San Juan Jabloteh, but behind by a lesser goals difference. In the knockout competitions the Stars took home the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield and finished runner-up in the Toyota Classic and FA Trophy.
North East Stars together with main sponsor DIRECTV also won the hearts of many with community and social projects across Trinidad.
DIRECTV’s Bernard Pantin applauded the “tremendous spirit of the players and the officials at North East Stars coming out of the extended 2010-2011 season that DIRECTV has been associated with the club.”
Speaking at the awards Stars’ CEO Brent Sancho boasted, “We are happy to say that DIRECTV North East Stars is the best supported team in the Pro League for the 2010-2011 season.”
He thanked supporters for sticking with the club through its ups and downs and applauded the involvement of club sponsors DIRECTV, Carib and Toyota among others.
