Anil RobertsMinister of Sport, Anil Roberts yesterday denied that the Digicel Pro League would collapse.

“This will not happen once I am the minister and in government,” Roberts said in a telephone interview.

Recently the financial hardship facing the Pro League was highlighted with Chief Executive Officer of Adam’s Construction San Juan Jabloteh, Azaad Khan complaining that finances agreed between the clubs and government were not forthcoming.

The financial assistance was used to offset the expenses from salaries and match preparation. Khan revealed that his club received $50,000 per month while several others got $17,000 per month.

The Sports Minister stated that the government fully supported the Pro League and will continue to provide assistance.

“Last year we gave the Pro League $4million and now we are going to pump more money into the league. We recognise this is an industry that is thriving and is in need of upkeep if we are to continue our support of the nation’s youth,” said Roberts.

He added that the Pro League is the main forum which develops players for the national team. Therefore, Roberts is hoping to increase the funding to $5million to ensure the sustenance of the league.
