Watch out Earl Jean,” these were the words of W Connection striker Hughtun Hector after he was named as top scorer in the just concluded First citizens cup tournament.
“We the youths went out and did it for the team”, said the 21year-old player who scored four goals in the competition including one in his teams 3-1 victory in the finals against North East Stars to finish as leading scorer in the competition.
The former Vessigny Senior Comprehensive standout known for his dribbling skills has proven to be a revelation for W Connection since making his way into the teams starting eleven this season, scoring six goals including a hat-trick against Superstar Rangers in the First Citizens Cup quarterfinals.
“It’s a good thing to be able to come into the team as a young player and score goals”, Hector said of his performances thus far. “My goals also came in good timing as I’m looking forward to getting a call up to the national team, so it’s up to me to continue scoring goals even if it means that I’ll have to put some more experienced players in the team on the bench”, he ended.
Also showering praise on the player was St Lucian-born coach Stuart Charles-Fervier who commended his young team for the manner in which they secured victory in Fridays final against North East.
Fervier said his team admirably stuck to the game plan of controlling possession and applying pressure on their opponents and in the end it paid off, “I was never worried about the team because we came into the competition on a great run of form, the last nine games we played we won eight and drew one so we were pretty confident”, he said.
Despite all the attention given to the youthfulness of his team the St
Lucian also took time to give credit to his senior players whose expert guidance he said contributed tremendously to their overall success.
The coach further gave kudos to his goal-keeper Jan Michael Williams, who was recently selected in national squad, “Yes we all know that Hector, Toussaint and Bartholomew performed fantastically and to an extent above expectation but many people have overlooked Jan-Michael, who I believe is the best keeper in the League at present”, Fervier stated.
“Jan-Michael’s solidness at the back conceding only one goal in the entire competition is the reason why if I had my way I’d name him the ‘Most Outstanding Player’ of the tournament,” said the former national coach.
The next mission for the “Savonetta Boys” would now have to be regaining ground in the League where they are currently third behind Joe Public and Rivals Jabloteh.
