Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 17 boys secured their berth in the semi-finals of the Caribbean Youth Cup with a tardy 3-0 victory over Dominican Republic in Wednesday’s quarter final fixture at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
Jamaica got by Guadeloupe 3-1 in another quarter final encounter at Guaracara Park. The other winners on the day were Cuba, 2-1 over Bermuda and Haiti, 6-0 over St Vincent and the Grenadines. Those two winners will meet in the earlier semi-final match from 4pm on Friday. T&T coach Anton Corneal described Dominican Republic as tricky opponents.
“It was a win which we had to work for but we did well and got a deserved result. We saw that they had some guys in the forward line and in the middle who could play and were good runners. It meant we had to close them down and try to take charge of the game as quickly as possible. We got two late goals but I think overall we were the better team.
“We expect an even tougher contest from Jamaica in the semi-finals because that is always a well contested local derby and at this stage of the tournament both teams would have grown and we should expect a good encounter,” Corneal said. Britto was again satisfied with the result.
“Our hard work paid off in this game. It wasn’t easy for us but we worked hard and we stuck to a plan. I was happy to assist with the three goals. We could have played better in the first half. One of the things about is that we are very spiritual. We pray before training and after and even when we are on the field. We always try to do the right things and be disciplined throughout,” Britto added.
