Trinidad and Tobago’s “Young Warriors” shut out Grenada 5-0 in their second match in Group “E” of this year’s Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Youth Cup at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella yesterday.
The local youngsters got on track from the seventh minute when Stephen Knox finished a good pass by teammate Chad de Freitas, who dispossessed defender Kentell Charles on the right flank. Leston Paul made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute following a clever mid-field build-up. Daniel Joseph played the ball to Knox who in turn slipped a pass to Paul for him to cleverly side-foot the ball past goalkeeper Jason Belfon. Grenada made a change of goalkeeper at the half-time interval, with Jos Charles replacing Belfon, but the “Young Warriors” continued to dominate play but had to wait until the 81st minute to score again.
Substitute Sean de Silva sent a short pass to Joseph on the edge of the penalty area and he sent a pass to Knox who easily strolled past the Grenada defence to beat new keeper Charles.
Knox completed his hat-tick in the 84th minute again after some good exchange of passes. He got the ball 30 metres out and raced goalward before unleashing a powerful right foot shot past ‘keeper Charles.
In time added on, De Freitas polished off the Grenadians when Joseph took a long pass on a counter-attack, sent the ball to Knox who flicked it back to Joseph who collected on left and drifted towards goal.
He slipped a pass to De Freitas whose shot flew through goalkeeper Charles’ hand. Earlier, Guyana beat Aruba 3-0 with all goals coming in the second session. Andrew Murray who netted a double got his first for the Guyanese in the 62nd minute. He doubled up with an 83rd strike before Sherlone Edwards netted in the 87th. The “Young Warriors” play Guyana next at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima tomorrow from 5 pm. Earlier at the same venue, Aruba tangle with Grenada from 3 pm.
