National Under 20 defender Alvin Jones didn’t have the chance to see his father Kelvin play for the country during the unforgettable 1990 “Road to Italy” campaign but he has heard so much about it that he recalls some of the experiences as if he witnessed them first hand.
Just over two decades later, the 18-year-old W Connection player from Carenage wants to make senior Jones a proud father.
“I want to play in a World Cup. My first chance is this Under 20 World Cup so I’m giving it my all,” said the defender. Jones was by far T&T’s top defender during the recent first round qualifiers in St Vincent/Grenadines, marshaling the T&T defence in the three matches.
“That’s how I play… I give everything to try and stop the ball from entering the net. I don’t score goals but as a defender I can help prevent them.”
“My main goal is to try and help the team to qualify this time and for me to play in a World Cup some day.
I grew up hearing all these stories about my dad playing for the national team. “And now my brother (Joevin) is on the senior team and I’m proud of both of them.
“They are the ones who inspire me. I want to be like them when I grow up,” Jones laughed. T&T will contest the final CFU World Cup qualifying round in Jamaica in November.
