FORMER champions Mayaro Spurs and Illusion SC are locked in battle for championship honours in the Senior Division of the 2009 bpTT Mayaro Football League competition.

Spurs and Illusion both have 24 points after nine completed rounds, with eight victories and one loss each. Spurs, however, occupy first position by virtue of a better goal difference.

Illusion enhanced their title aspirations last Friday when they edged Mayaro Boys 3-2, with D. Reyes (2) and K Lander ensuring full points for their team.

Stephen Calliste and Nigel Alexander scored for the Boys, who are in fifth position in the league standings with 19 points from nine matches.

Also last week, Mayguaya United continued their climb up the table, with a 12-0 thrashing of Warriors. Hat-tricks by Sherlon Campbell and Kumi Francois, double strikes from Keyion Beckles and Earlon Thomas, and contributions from Andy Hagley and Akeem Francois propelled Mayguaya to their compelling victory.

The win has established Mayguaya as a major title contender, moving them to 20 points from nine matches.

An improving Rio Claro United won 3-0 over St. Ann’s on Sunday, with Dwayne Marcano (2) and Leo Felix doing the damage.

Rio Claro occupy third place in the league with 21 points, but have played 11 matches,
