GONS are the new champions of the Tiger Tanks Trinidad Unlimited-sponsored Fyzabad Community Football League.
They wrested the title from last year’s winners New Commers after they played to a 2-2 draw in the final at the Petrotrin Fyzabad Recreation ground watched by a massive crowd, to finish two points clear of their arch-rivals.
The victory gave Gons the $5,000 winner’s prize and set them up for a chance at the $10,000 on offer in the South-west Super League against top teams from the Point Fortin, La Brea, Santa Flora and Fyzabad league.
Action in the league’s knockout quarter-finals began yesterday, and New Commers take on New City Youths today, with Gons facing Standard SC on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jaysson Joseph (Avocat United) was the league’s leading goalscorer with nine goals including a beaver trick.
Kashif Bass (New Commers) was runner-up on eight goals. Shavon Fredericks (Fyzabad United) who also scored a beaver trick, Lester Edwards (New Commers) and Jamal Ayers (Avocat United) got six goals each.
Chanardath Badoon (Standard SC) and Marlon Lewis (Gons) were next on four goals each while Kevon Morgan (Jokers) netted three.
