Point Fortin-based Mahaica United won the opening game in the inaugural Southwest Super League last Sunday when they defeated Vance River Ball Stars 2-1 at the Brighton Sports Ground in La Brea.
The first Mahaica goal came in the 18th minute from the boot of former national Under-17 forward Andre Alexis and 20 minutes later, midfielder Brenton De Leon added to the score to give the Point Fortin squad a 2 goal lead at half-time.
In wet conditions, the Vance River Ball Stars team took the game to their opponents in the second half and it was no surprise when striker Sid McCall scored for the La Brea team in the 70th minute. Despite some desperate last-minute efforts Ball Stars could not find the equaliser and Mahaica United walked away with full points when the game ended.
After the game, Sports Minister Gary Hunt presented the Man-of-the-Match award to Mahaica’s De Leon. The Southwest Superleague continues tomorrow when Los Bajos United clash with Newcomers of Fyzabad at the Palo Seco Velodrome from 6p.m.
