Jah Unit is the winner of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA) sponsored Freedom Cup… No More Borders Football Tournament. The Basilon Street boys captured the title by beating LVT of St Barb’s 1-0 in the final on Friday at St Paul Street Multi Purpose Sporting Complex.
After a tense goalless first half, Jah Unit’s striker Claude Sandy scored the only goal of the final in the 18th minute of the second half, ensuring his team the title of Freedom Cup Champions 2009.
Barcelona copped the third place in the tournament owing to the absence of Phase II. Freedom Cup…No More Borders had been in progress since September 26, and was launched at the St Paul Street Multi Purpose Sporting Complex on October 16.
The inaugural football initiative sought to empower the youth throughout the Morvant / Laventille area with the intention of eradicating border lines within the community and building positive relationships among the youth. More than 125 teams participated in the tournament.
