The 2010 bpTT Mayaro Football League got off to an exciting start with an exhibition double-header at the Mayaro Recreation Ground on Saturday.
The matches featured senior and junior players from Mayaro who pitted their skills against their counterparts from the premier Trinidad and Tobago Pro-League.
In the opening match, a Mayaro Spurs Under-18 team held an Under-21 team from North East Stars to a closely-fought 1-1 draw.
North-East Stars opened the scoring after 24 minutes through Jeffron Cornwall following some good build-up play from midfield. Mayaro Spurs equalised on the half-hour through rising star Kerneal Hagley.
Although North-East Stars had the better of the exchanges in the first-half, Spurs came into their own after the resumption. However, neither team could take control as both defences held tight.
In the feature match, a representative TT Pro-League X1 overcame a gritty Mayaro Football League X1 by a 4-2 margin. The run of play, however, was more even than the score suggests.
The Pro-League X1 went ahead in the fifth minute through Karon Forster. Mayaro equalised in the 35th through Jody Allsop, and took the lead two minutes later on a strike from Carlon “Bound to Score” Hughes.
However, the Pro-League outfit stepped up their game in the second-half and scored three more goals through Karon Clarke, Randy Harris and Akeem Marshall, to claim the victory. They also missed a penalty.
Razack Jan, President of the Mayaro Football League, said he was pleased with the standard of football from the Mayaro players who held their own against opposition who are competing in the premier league in the country.
Jan, who is also the livewire of the league, thanked sponsors bpTT for partnering with the community to ensure that football continues to have a bright future in the south-east region.
“The Mayaro league is the stepping stone for our young stars to display their talents and go on to greater heights and the organisational and financial support we have received over the years from bpTT is critical to the success of the league,” he pointed out.
Anthony Marshall, coach of the Pro-League X1, said although the match against the Mayaro Football League X1 was an exhibition fixture, it was hard-fought with both sides living up to expectations. “There are very good players in Mayaro and I predict a bright future for them in the sport,” he added.
In an interview, Ronda Francis, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, bpTT, said sport was one of the areas that the energy company was committed to for the sustainable development of the human and other resources of the wider Mayaro community.
“The Mayaro Football League is one of the best organised community organisations in Mayaro. BPTT is pleased to partner with the league to continue to develop the exciting football talent in this region,” Francis stated.
This year marks the 11th straight year that bpTT is sponsoring the Mayaro Football League. Competitive action in the Senior Division kicks off at the Mayaro Recreation Ground on Saturday. Defending league champion is Illusion Sports Club.
