WASA hit the crossbar twice and Tobago international goalkeeper Joel Sampson brought off several saves to earn Tobago’s 1976 FC Phoenix a point on the road against national Super League leaders WASA FC at St Joseph on Sunday.

WASA striker Jaheim Hernandez hit the post in both halves, including in the final five minutes when bypassing the keeper but still failing to find the open net.

The ball followed Hernandez everywhere, but he just could not score – a combination of selfish play and bad decision combining to keep both him and his teammates off the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, Keron Clarke, who has been putting away the goals for WASA this season, found Sampson in terrific form. Sampson, who last Thursday was in goal for Tobago in their 3-0 friendly international loss to Guadeloupe, twice brought off brilliant saves to deny Clarke.

Pressed back for long periods in the first half, Phoenix put up solid defence, with the centre back Simon Nedd doing a lot of good work for his team.

Often, both teams took too direct an approach to goal. But by the second half, Phoenix found a rhythm and saw starting striker Mickaeel Gordon and substitute Christopher Morgan, putting a lot of pressure on the WASA defence.

Gordon was clear through the middle without shaking the net. He hit wide on one occasion, and the second time struck the ball straight at T&T’s Under-20 World Cup goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel – now playing with WASA after stints in the Pro League with Joe Public and Caledonia AIA.

WASA appeared to be holding on more than the fitter visitors towards the end, but looked sure to score when Hernandez raced past goalie Sampson. But facing the open goal, he again struck the crossbar from a slight angle.
