Forward Josimar Belgrave scored a goal in each half as Defence Force whipped Tobago FC Phoenix 1976 3-1 in their top-of-the-table CNG National Super League Premier Division clash on Sunday to widen its lead over idle Guaya United.

Going into the match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva with a one point advantage over Guaya United from a match more at the top of the 15-team table, Defence Force was in the hunt to pick up three valuable points. However, it was third placed Phoenix which took the lead as early as the fourth minute to put the host under pressure.

Belgrave then got the “Teteron men” level in the 26th minute for a 1-1 half-time scoreline before he put his team ahead in the 56th minute with his joint league best 21st goal of the season, the same as Guaya United’s Carlon Hughes and captain Ryan Stewart.

Defence Force continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges and with four minutes left on the clock, Aaron Lester sealed all three points to lift his team to 57 points from 25 matches and three left to play.

Guaya United is second with 53 points and two matches in hand followed by Tobago Phoenix with 46 points from 25 matches, Matura ReUnited (44 from 24 matches) and FC Santa Rosa, with 40 from 26 matches.

Up at Matura Recreation Ground, Keish Charles netted with the last kick of the match to earn Matura Re United, a 1-0 win over Real Maracas while FC Santa Rosa and Petrotrin Palo Seco battled to a 1-1 draw at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macaoya.

The quest for the league title resumes on Thursday with Defence Force and Guaya United, both in action against Matura ReUnited and Tobago Phoenix respectively.
