FC Santa Rosa stayed top of the points standings in League One of the TT Super League after a narrow 1-0 win over Defence Force, in a Round 18 contest on Sunday.
With the result, Santa Rosa continued their one-point advantage over Guaya United, who also registered a 1-0 victory over Queen’s Park.
At the Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Field in Mucurapo, Santa Rosa registered their 14th win of the season courtesy of an own goal by Devin Jordan in the 20th minute.
Guaya United have been among the top three on the standings since the season got going, and they remained within touching distance of Santa Rosa after the prolific Carlon Hughes found the back of the net in the 30th minute, sparking wild celebrations from the home fans at the Guayaguayare Recreation Ground. This was Hughes’ 22nd of the 2017 campaign, and he seems a virtual certainty for the Golden Boot award as the tournament’s leading goal-scorer.
Cunupia overtook Defence Force for third place on the standings after they defeated Police 4-3 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium’s main field.
Kevon Woodley scored twice, in the 48th and 50th, while Michael Darko (12th) and Hakeem Legall (22nd) added one apiece for Cunupia FC. Collins Williams netted a pair for the lawmen, in the 58th and 67th, while Kenwin Matthew got the other in the 48th.
The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) were also in winners’ row on Sunday, as they pipped Club Sando Moruga 3-2 at the UTT O’Meara Campus Ground, Arima.
Ryan Myers (eighth), Cyrano Glen (14th) and Kevaughn Connell (21st) found the back of the net for UTT, while Donrick Mascall (36th) and Maurice Dick (44th) replied for the visitors.
