Hydro Tech Guaya United yesterday returned to the top of the T&T Super League’s top division standings as a 3-1 win for the ‘Green Army’ put a spoke in the wheel of defending champion club, FC Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa, who are also called the ‘Big Cannons’ led the league at the start of yesterday’s round with 44 points, but only held a slender one point advantage over 2015 winners Guaya (43 pts) who made the trip to the Arima Velodrome for this top of the table clash.

Guaya scored first when former T&T international midfielder Andrei Pacheco brought their normally energetic support base to life in the 17th minute.

There were many story lines to this encounter one of which saw Keith Look Loy, head coach of Santa Rosa, come face to face with Ron La Forest who heads Guaya United’s staff and the former T&T youth players and childhood friends were not backing down.

Mayaro-born midfielder Ryan ‘Fry’ Stewart who once captained Guaya and is now in the Santa Rosa ranks wrote his own narrative in the 26th minute, producing a neat finish to put Santa Rosa level at 1-1.

But three minutes before half time, Kevin Jagdeosingh struck to once again send Guaya supporters into frenzied celebration through to the interval.

A testy battle between the two teams in the second half was marked with the ejection of Look Loy to the stands and bad went to worse for the holders of the title when Carlon Hughes headed Guaya into a 3-1 lead 20 minutes from the end of the match, which stood at the final whistle.

With that result Guaya United moves back to the top of the standings on 46 points with three matches remaining in the competition, leaving Santa Rosa to play catch-up.
