FC Santa Rosa has been closing in on its second T&T Super League title with just two round of matches to be played.
On Saturday, the team nicknamed the 'Big Cannons' opened up a three-point margin on its closest rivals Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) following a convincing 5-1 thrashing of Prison Services FC at the Arima Velodrome, taking it further in the lead to 54 points in 23 matches.
Queen's Park, the only team capable of catching Santa Rosa, gave themselves a shot in the leg the day after (Sunday) by dropping two valid points in a 2-2 tie with the defending champion team Guaya United at St Mary's College Ground in St Clair.
However, at the Velodrome, the home team made sure of maximum points courtesy a double from instrumental striker Keron Clarke in the space of two minutes, 92nd and 93rd.
However, it was the visitors who scored first when Nathan Julien found the nets in the 31st minute. Thereafter, it was all Santa Rosa with Noel Williams finding the equaliser in the 56th minute. Seventeen minutes later the home team took the lead and extended it in the space of a minute. First Andre Rampersad found the back of the net in the 73rd minute to knot the scores up, and before the Prison Service's defence could have regrouped, Ryan Stewart added another for a 3-1 advantage.
With the loss, the Prisons' officers maintained third on the standings with 44 points. At St Clair 'the Parkites' had to come from behind to share the points with Guaya. They got goals from Benedict Barrett in the 74th and Devon Modeste in the 84th.
Guaya, the 2017 champion team is distant fourth on the standings with 39 points, scored through Keston Frontin (39th) and Glenton Wolfe on the stroke of half-time.
Santa Rosa will next face Metal X Erin F.C on Saturday at the Erin Recreation Ground from 6 pm, while the Parkites will jump into action a day later at the Knowles Street Recreation Ground in Curepe against RSSR FC from 3:30 pm.
