Defence Force blew the race for the bmobile National Super League title wide open when it surprised defending champions and current leaders WASA 1-0 at St Joseph Ground, yesterday.
The “Water Boys” went into the match brimming with confidence following lopsided wins over Economy Strikers (11-0) and Alcoa Carenage United (6-0).

However, Defence Force, coming off an entertaining 3-3 draw with St Francois National was up to the task and managed to stun the host. In an evenly contested match of few chances at both ends of the field, WASA was undone by a first-half strike from national futsal (five-a-side) player Sterling O’Brien on a wet and soggy ground.

Despite the defeat, WASA remained top of the 13-team table with 40 points from 19 matches, but only one ahead of a surging Joe Public.

The “Eastern Lions” took full advantage of WASA’s slip up with a convincing 4-1 thrashing of M&M Harvard in the first match of a double-header at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya. Brent Antoine did the damage for Joe Public with a hat-trick, in the 31st, 61st and 70th minute after Travis Mulraine had fired in a 30th minute opener.

Glen Walker got a consolation item for the St James-based Harvard.

However, at Frederick Settlement, third placed Alcoa Carenage United (35 points) missed another chance to close the gap as the top after it suffered its fourth straight defeat, going under to Harlem Strikers 4-2 after taking an early 1-0 lead.
