Avery John started and played in only one game in the current World Cup qualifying campaign prior to last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Panama. But having stuck it out for a courageous performance, he could well be a fixture in the team after getting the thumbs up from coach Leo Beenhakker. His only previous appearance was in a scrape through 2-1 win over St Vincent and the Grenadines last November.

“I think I made a good impression but it’s all been down to hard work. The coach seems to have confidence in me and the performance on Saturday obviously wil keep that up,” said the New England Revolution player.“

"For me personally, I feel really good at the moment and I have that extra drive to go out there and put my best foot forward. He’s used me in two positions at centre and then at the left back position which I performed well at. So for me and the rest of guys it’s just a matter of keeping the momentum going and I think the Mexico game is a decent test of our character,” John said following a training session at the Stadio Universitario in Monterrey on Tuesday morning.

Defender Dennis Lawrence is also on a high following his strike against the Panamanians.

“It’s important that we keep in this frame of mind and to score a goal is part of the game but we all have our roles to play and once we can do that there’s no reason why things wouldn’t go our way,” Lawrence said.
