T&T Pro League’s very own David Atiba Charles has expressed a feeling of relief since receiving the news that he has been called by head coach Leo Beenhakker as one of 24 players form which 23 will move on to the 2006 World Cup.
The W Connection defender, recently back home from a trial in China, has also thanked Beenhakker for showing faith in the locally-based pros by selecting himself, Anthony Wolfe, Anthony Rougier, Cyd Gray and Aurtis Whitley.
Charles said “I was a relieved man when I heard that I was selected in the squad of 24 players. It was such a big thing to get it off my chest and now I really just want to prepare for the upcoming events and then look ahead to the World Cup.”
Since the announcement, Charles said his phone has not stopped ringing as several well wishers have been in touch.
“My phone has been ringing off the hook with calls from people I don’t even know. It’s almost the same thing as when we had just qualified for the World Cup. But I know there’s still a lot of hard work to be done. A lot of people are also telling me how happy they are about the coach calling the home-based pros.”
With offers from a couple clubs in Greece and France, Charles has decided to remain home and train with Connection and will now get himself ready to face Peru on May 10th.
