Coat of ArmsOn behalf of the Executive, membership and supporters of the United National Congress, I wish to congratulate the Trinidad and Tobago National Football Team on last night's 2-1 victory in the World Cup Qualifier against the United States of America.
Our Soca Warriors played with confidence and heart in this most crucial match. It certainly must have been no easy task for these young men who carry the dreams, hopes and aspirations of an entire nation of 1.3 million people on their shoulders.

Veterans Dwight Yorke and Russel Latapy of the Strike Squad, continue to demonstrate true patriotic spirit, rising time and time again to the call to national service. They paid the vendetta that has been outstanding since November 19, 1989, proving that sometimes, age is really just a number.

The other members of the team must also be commended for a performance that was of a high standard, showing control, level-headedness, skill, cooperation and harmony. If our football machinery remains as finely tuned as it appeared last night, I am certain our team will take us to World Cup 2010.

I take this opportunity to congratulate those who supported the team in whatever way, and I urge the rest of the nation to unite and get behind the Warriors as they continue to fight in the remaining matches. Every moment from now, our Soca Warriors must see and feel the support and love that we have for them. They must know that we are with them.

I also call upon the government to put its petty, partisan politicking aside and provide the national team – inclusive of the technical staff – with the resources they need to proceed. It is critical that our team remains focused on the eye of the bird and not be distracted or unsettled by unnecessary issues.

To our Soca Warriors, I say, "Stand tall! Never surrender! And victory will be yours."
