NOT officially advertised for the “Balls of Fire” historic event to take place at the Queen’s Park Oval today was the fact that Dwight Yorke will be lining up with the 1989 Strike Squad alongside current National football coach Russell Latapy and their close friend, cricket great Brian Lara.

The team, captained by Clayton Morris, also includes Brian Williams, Marvin Faustin, Kerry Jamerson, Michael Maurice, Philbert Jones, Hudson Charles, Leonsen Lewis and Angus Eve, with coach Everard “Gally” Cummings and Neville Chance as manager.

Along with Latapy and Pat Jennings, the former Northern Ireland goalkeeper, Yorke holds the record for participation in different World Cup competitions, including qualifying stages – six in total in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010.

He is currently training with Tranmere Rovers with old friend John Barnes, having previously played for Aston Villa, followed by stints with Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Sydney FC and Sunderland.

The football game, which starts at 8.30 pm tonight, immediately follows the day-night 20/20 match, from which some members of the two teams will combine to show their football prowess as they take on the Strike Squad.

All proceeds from this event go towards the Pearl and Bunty Lara Foundation, WIPA Development Fund and a combination of various players’ charities.
