Brazilian Jose Luis Seabra is expected to wear the red, black and white colours of T&T for the first time on Friday against Azerbaijan at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, from 6 pm.

The 30-year-old player, who was given permanent T&T residence last week, is in the squad of players for both friendlies against the Carlos Alberto-coached Azerbaijan.

T&T football fans have been promised a good showing from Azerbaijan, a country that only began playing World Cup matches in 1994.

Coach of Azerbaijan Carlos Alberto, who captained Brazil to an historic win in the World Cup in 1970, said yesterday that “fans are guaranteed a good showing from my team.”

Speaking at a press conference at the Queen’s Park Oval, Alberto urged T&T fans to come out and support their country’s footballers.

“I hope that everybody support the match,” said Alberto, who is making his second visit to T&T having played for New York Cosmos against the national team in 1978.

“Support T&T because you have an important match next month against the USA,” Alberto added.

Azerbaijan, a breakaway from the Soviet Union, is a young team growing from strength to strength.
The team, which is made up of a host of young players between the ages of 21 and 24, also plays the “Soca Warriors” on Sunday at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella from 3.30 pm.

Alberto, who arrived a day ahead of the team along with assistant coach Marcelo Campelo, said that his team has improved since he took up the job as coach exactly a year ago.

“The players have shown that they are improving. We still have six qualifying matches and are looking forward to the 2006 World Cup.”

In recent times, Azerbaijan, rated 113 in the FIFA ranking, lost 0-1 to England, drew goalless with Northern Ireland, 1-1 with Wales and beat Austria 2-0.

Like T&T, the country will also begin its World Cup qualification on February 9, playing against Bolivia.

“It will be the first time that the side will cross the ocean to play an international match,” disclosed Alberto. “They are coming in from the cold.”

Manager of the T&T Richard Braithwaite said it will be an excellent chance for the local players to raise the standard of their game after below-par performances against Antigua and Barbuda 2-1 and St Vincent and the Grenadines (0-1).

He said that apart from Seabra, also coming into the team will be Scott Sealy, who has been drafted to play for Kansas City Wizards in the MLS. Out through injury are defenceman Keyeno Thomas and midfielder Kerwyn Jemmott.
