Strike Squad of 1989 got the better of Doctors, Unit Trust and Central Bank on Saturday to secure the top spot in its invitational one-day tournament, which launched its relief effort for Haiti entitled ‘Haiti You Are Not Forgotten’ on Fatima College ground, Mucurapo Road, Port of Spain.
Led by a double from newly recruited national assistant coach, Marvin Faustin, and a goal by Philbert Jones, Strike Squad got the better of Doctors, after draws with Unit Trust (0-0) and Central Bank (2-2).
Strike Squad finished with eight points, one more that second placed Doctors. Unit Trust (six pts) was third and Central Bank (five pts) fourth.
The second event, a Family Fun Day, will take place on May 5 at Skinner Park, San Fernando, where the Strike Squad intends to raise funds through contributions collected at the door. The Family Fun Day will include live performances by local artists, a car show and other activities.
“We wanted to do something where we could involve the entire nation,” said Brian Williams, a member of the 1989 Strike Squad. “Seeing that Haiti is our neighbour in the Caribbean, we thought we should do something to assist,” Williams explained.
“When you look at the history of Haiti you will see that they are one of the first in the Caribbean to become an independent nation, they fought against slavery, and I personally have an attachment to the people of Haiti.”
Williams urged T&T to come out and support the event, explaining that admission to the ground will be whatever contribution those attending wish to make to the effort.
The Strike Squad reunited in 2002 and since then has been going around to communities in T&T and sharing their experiences. According to captain, Clayton Morris, the event is a big bite taken by the “Squad”, but “the players felt that they needed to assist Haiti in any way possible”.
