Former national forward and T&TEC head coach Dexter Cyrus says he now has a new perspective on coaching after completing the inaugural T&TFF ‘C’ License under the Dutch vision at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence earlier this month.
Cyrus, who led T&TEC to the double in the 2010 bmobile National Super League, was among the 24 local coaches who graduated and he is confident that his coaching methods are on the improve.
“Definitely it showed me a new way of looking at things. It makes things much clearer now. They gave us some specific guidelines to work with and I didn’t understand it at first but being rather open to it and embracing it, I realised it definitely helps with coaching the game and implementing certain things,” Cyrus said.
“I want to fulfill my coaching potential. I think God has blessed me with a very good tactical eye. I see a lot of stuff that I need to put into perspective as a coach. Now I want to get qualified via the various licenses and see how far it takes me,” Cyrus added.
The former United Petrotrin player made six appearances for T&T and among his highlights was a beaver trick in a 5-0 win over Dominica in the 1994 Shell Caribbean Cup.
Fellow teammate Dean Pacheco, who scored a double in the 7-2 win over Martinique in the final that year, also completed the recent ‘C’ license course.
Another double goalscorer in that match at the Queen’s Park Oval, Hutson Charles, is also an assistant coach with the T&TFF which intends to continue increasing its pool of coaches to work with national teams.
Another one from that 1994 winning squad who also struck a double in the final, Angus Eve, has recently been made assistant coach of the T&T Under-23 team.
