Shane Calderon and Shastri Spencer netted a goal each but defence was the name of the game as their team , St Augustine Senior Comprehensive, registered another win in the British Gas Secondary School Football League East Zone competition yesterday.
The “Green machine” celebrated a 2-1 win over arch rival Arima Senior Comprehensive at St Augustine, bettering the 2-2 draw with the “Dial Dynamos” in round one. Arima’s Willis Plaza was the first to put his name on the scoresheet in the 21st minute.
Plaza’s goal seemed to have turned on a light in the St Augustine’s defenders Joel Williams, Jesse Martinez and Stephen Pierre as they stepped up their defensive intensity limiting Arima’s strikes at goal.
Shane Calderon scored five minutes before the end of the first half to even the scores to the dismay of Arima.
In the second half, St Augustine came out the aggressor getting numerous attempts at the goal but were either wide or over the bar, or saved by goalkeeper Demasius Metivier.
But as the chants of ‘one more’ from the St Augustine crowd increased so did the attacks and Shastri Spencer rewarded their support with a goal in the 58th minute.
St Augustine remains the leader of the East Zone, seven points ahead of second-place San Juan. In other matches in the East, Dwight Crichlow netted a hattrick to lead El Dorado Secondary Comprehensive to a 5-0 victory over Valencia High School.
His goals came in the 12th, 20th and 31st minutes in the first session while the other two goals were scored by Jerrel Diaz (40th) and Keston Henry (53rd).
Both Hillview and St George’s Colleges recorded 1-0 victories against San Juan and Barataria Secondary Comprehensives respectively.
