Football fans will have access to matches in this year’s Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) at their fingertips through Digicel’s Play Go app.
At yesterday’s launch of the league at the Call Room of the National Cycling Centre in Couva, Digicel’s Marketing Manager Lisa Giuseppi said they are in the business of making meaningful contributions by connecting you to your loved ones, and connecting you to entertainment in the comfort of your homes or in the palm of your hands. As such fans can download the app from their respective store free of charge and tune in through Sportsmax.
Giuseppi said her company’s partnership with the SSFL is viewed as an investment in our people which is why they eagerly accepted the opportunity three years ago. “For us it exemplifies our ethos; giving back to the communities were serve: investing in the future of this twin island nation and nurturing and developing the youth in sport from grass root to professional” Giuseppi explained.
The league kicks off with a double header at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva tomorrow (Friday), in which last year’s InterCol Champions Shiva Boys Hindu College will be up against southern rival Naparima College in the feature game at 5pm in the Premier Division. In the opening match Carapichaima East Secondary will take on Fatima College from 3pm.
Jamaican Sports Network Sportsmax is also bracing for an exciting season, giving a promise that it will broadcast 21 matches of the Premier Division and the Intercol. Tanya Lee, Head of Marketing at Sportsmax said her company will also honour a commitment to air the Girls InterCol final live, based on a request by Anthony Creed, the ex SSFL president last year and because she believes in the development of women in sports.
She said the SSFL has been a mainstay in their sports inventory, to the point where it is the third largest investment in sports. “Just to show how much of a mainstay this will be for us, Sportsmax ‘s investment in high school sports is the third largest monetary investment within our catalogue of sports rights, bettered only by our investments in La Liga and the NBA” Lee explained.
In their 10 years-plus of existence the cable channel has benefited tremendously from T&T’s involvement, as its second market when it expanded beyond the shores of Jamaica in 2007. Lee told a large gathering that included president of the SSFL William Wallace, members from various sponsors such as Coca Cola, First Citizens, Shell, executives of the SSFL, student players from various schools, teachers and coaches that some 1.3 million people from 25 countries in the Caribbean will be viewing the SSFL premiership and intercol matches in time to come.

Acknowledging the important role the Secondary School Football League (SSFL) plays in the development of young people, president of the SSFL William Wallace announced that an office at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva was given to them to conduct their administrative affairs by Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith.
Speaking at the launch of the league at the Call Room of the National Cycling Centre (NCC) Wallace told a large gathering that his executives are now in the process of constructing its own website for the league, while the parent T&T Football Association is in the process of drafting up Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the SSFL for coaching education to be given to the school coaches.
Wallace who has been an executive of the schools’ league for many years, said the football association met with them recently to acknowledge the role the SSFL has played in the overall development of the sport and to form a partnership between the parties.
He said coaches in the league, for the first time last month, were made to do a C- Prep License for coaches with no qualifications; C License and a B License. It was the first time the courses were ever done in T&T, Wallace said.
He urged the young players to accept the fact that they will encounter players who will be better than them in the league. He also urged players to accept that there will be failures and that they should use these failures to appreciate their achievements.
Meanwhile, Jenelle Holloway, Product Manager Marketing at First Citizens said her organization will be offering $45, 000 in new nEo Youth Savings Accounts to players from the Premier League of the SSFL and will educate them about the importance of habitual savings and managing their finances. In the past the bank facilitated nEo financial tours at 20 schools that participated in the league, where they took the opportunity to educate students on sound financial planning.
