"Determination, determination."

That was the chant of the victorious Signal Hill Secondary Comprehensive girls as they wrapped up the BGTT Girls National InterCol title yesterday with a 1-0 win over Malick Secondary Comprehensive at St Anthony's College Ground, Westmoorings. A single goal by Renasha Jones in the 56th minute sealed the affair. A few fans from Tobago celebrated when the final whistle sounded.
Malick would have felt the win was theirs after wresting the Trinidad title from national league winners St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive, but Signal Hill proved better on the day and the result showed.

Signal Hill pressed for the advantage in the first period, with Malick content to look for the counterattack.

For Signal Hill, Karyn Forbes threatened with her powerful, testing free-kick, while Jones also worried the Malick defence with some searching runs, but after a 0-0 half-time score, Signal Hill surged on looking for the winner.

Not even the positive but ill-fated make-shift rhythm section could rouse Malick to score. Affiyah Matthian tested Signal Hill goalkeeper Julie McDougall eight minutes after the resumption, then Cassey McKenzie blasted over in the 50th.

But Jones' powerful header provided the decider as she leapt to beat Malick goalie Michelle Bournes at the near post. Twenty minutes later, Signal Hill were celebrating with the InterCol trophy and Malick had to settle for second best.
