Point Fortin Civic annihilated Super League outfit, Stokely Vale, on Saturday afternoon with an incredible 11-0 win at the Mahaica Oval, Point Fortin in the 2013 Toyota Classic.
And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, the Tobagonians conceded three of the 11 goals in consecutive minutes just before the half time whistle.
Point Fortin were already leading comfortably with goals by Weslie John, scoring in the 24th minute, and a pair from Marcus Joseph, scoring in the 36th and 40th minutes, when Andre Toussaint scored in the 43rd minute, then Joseph wrapped up his individual hat-trick feat in the 44th minute, before captain Kelvin Modeste made it 6-0 by the 45th minute.
In the second period the Tobagonians were less unfortunate, only by a goal, after Point Fortin registered five more goals to complete the 11-0 route.
Matthew Bartholomew and Andre Alexis both grabbed a pair of goals each in the second half; hitting the back of the net in the 50th and 57th minutes, and 63rd and 82nd minutes respectively, and Andrei Pacheco had his name on the score sheet in the 70th minute.
Later in the afternoon Central FC tackled Joe Public in the first match of Saturday’s preliminary round double header at the Marvin Lee Stadium, and comfortably defeated the Super League outfit 3-0.
Central took the lead in the 5th minute of play after an intended cross by Darren Mitchell forced a save out of goalkeeper Keston Aberdeen, pushing the effort onto the crossbar but not out of play, and the “Sharks” right-back Dwight Pope was present to hit into the net for the 1-0 advantage which lasted throughout the half.
Joe Public’s problems worsened just before the hour mark when substitute Ricardo Bennett, only eight minutes on the pitch, was red carded by referee Larry Lalchan following a high kick to the stomach of Central defender Jamal Jack in the 58th minute.
And it all came crashing down for the “Eastern Lions” from then on, despite putting up a creditable fight.
Aberdeen, who pulled off two saves denying Marvin Oliver and Johan Peltier early in the second period, was beaten by a deflected Dwight Quintero strike which cushioned Central 2-0 in the 63rd minute.
Then in the 67th minute, the “Sharks” made it 3-0 when substitute Rundell Winchester—only five minutes on—linked up with fellow Tobagonian Mitchell’s diagonal pass and completed a cool finish past Aberdeen.
Mitchell, with two assists, and Winchester, with a goal, clearly enjoyed a much better Saturday than former club, Stokely Vale.
Central advances to meet Defence Force in the quarter-final round next weekend, while Point Fortin awaits the winner between defending champions North East Stars and Super League’s Guaya United, which will be played on Sunday from 3pm at the Guayaguayare Secondary School Ground, Guayaguayare, to know thier next opponent.
In other confirmed quarter-final round matchups, Caledonia AIA will meet Super League leaders Club Sando, and two-time Toyota Classic winners, DIRECTV W Connection are against Malabar FC.
Malabar, inspired by a second half Gorian “Ratty” Highley hat-trick, pulled off a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over San Juan Jabloteh in the second match at the Macoya venue on Saturday night.
Jabloteh were well in front at the break, leading 3-1, with Kerry Baptiste opening the scoring in the 9th minute and Rennie Britto registering a double with goals in the 21st and 35th minutes against goalkeeper Zane Coker, which were separated by a Hayden Tinto strike in the 33rd minute for Malabar.
However, Tinto didn’t get his name on the score-sheet. Instead, match referee Michael London awarded an own goal after the ball took a deflection off the head of Jabloteh defender Nyron Jones and into the far upper corner—no chance for goalkeeper Kevin Doods.
In the second period, it was the Highley “show”.
The former W Connection forward reduced the deficit, 2-3, in the 52nd minute with a low drive into Doods far netting, before leveling the scores 3-3 on the hour mark.
Jabloteh had ample opportunities to pull themselves back in front, with Jelani Felix hitting the base of the upright in the 56th minute, Baptiste making poor contact to a low Britto cross in the 78th minute, and Britto himself hitting wide in the 83rd minute from a perfect Shaquille Bertrand pass.
Britto was stretchered of, injured in the process, after colliding with Coker.
Highley popped up again in the 85th minute to hand Malabar the winner, with a clinical strike, for a 4-3 score and a place in the quarter-final round.
