Defending champions St Augustine FC got their first victory of the season when they clobbered Club Sando 3-1 in the Women’s Super League (WOLF) at Frederick Settlement, Caroni yesterday. However, it was Trincity Nationals who stole the spotlight when they demolished Malvern 12-0 in a feature match of the First Division.

Prolific scorer Shanelle Warrick scored five goals in the win, while an equally dangerous Nia Honore scored a beaver-trick and Adanya Phillip notched a hat-trick. The win came only a week after the easterners hammered Diego Martin 10-0 at the Eddie Hart Ground in Tacarigua. 

In the Super League, the St Augustine women opened the scoring in the 24th minute from Naomie Guerra but the Southerners equalised  when Elise Simon beat the dive of the St Augustine goalkeeper in the 35th minute and ensured that both teams went to the dressing room at one-apiece at the half-way stage. After the resumption,  St Augustine took the lead for a second time from National Youth standout Chevonne John in the 72nd.

St Augustine put the game out of their opponents’ reach in the 76th minute when Laurel Theodore fired in to seal full points. In another game at Guaracara Park, Point-A-Pierre, Queen’s Park CC got their first three points in the Super League when they edged host Petrotrin 1-0. Ashley Alonzo got the lone goal in the 87th minute to ensure the victory.

In First Division action, Rangers defeated arch rivals WI Sports Real Dimension 2-1 in a heated contest at the Dibe Dundahill Belle Vue Recreation Ground in Long Circular.

After several missed chances on both sides, Rangers took the lead two minutes before the end of the first half through Natasha St Louis. Real Dimensions dominated the second half in search of the equaliser, but goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer stood firm for Rangers. Instead it was Rangers that extended their lead during the run of play from captain Analis Cummings in the 65th minute. 

The goal did not deter the determined Real Dimensions women and they were later rewarded for it. In added on time, Tamika Isaac pulled a goal back but it was too late. After the match, Rangers coach Jason Spence said he was particularly pleased to have won this game.

According to Spence: “I wanted a clear lead and this victory puts me two points ahead of the second place teams, St. Augustine and QPCC who both have four points.” In another game Central United edged St Ann’s Rangers 1-0 in the First Division, courtesy a lone strike from Allison Pivotte in the 63rd minute.

WoLF fixtures affected again by lack of referees

The weekend’s fixtures in the National Women’s Football League (WoLF) produced some surprises in the top division — the Super League — while Trincity Nationals continued to dominate the First Division.

Unfortunately, once again the issue of a lack of officials plagued matches in South and Central. However, the teams were determined to play; in some situations the teams agreed on having an individual to referee the match while in others, they made personal calls to get a referee to the venue.

In the weekend’s marquee matchup, Rangers defeated arch rivals WI Sports Real Dimension 2-1 in a heated contest at the Dibe/Dundonald Hill/Belle Vue Recreation Ground in Long Circular.

After both teams had missed several missed chances, Rangers took the lead two minutes before the end of the first half with a strike from Natasha St Louis. The second half was dominated by WI Sports Real Dimension, with the majority of play taking place in the Rangers half; but Tenesha Palmer was up to the task and made some brilliant saves to keep her team ahead of their opponents. Then, against the run of play, Rangers extended their lead with a goal from captain Analise Cummings. Dimension maintained the pressure and finally, Tamika Isaac got her side a consolation item in time added-on.

After the final whistle, asked what winning the match meant for his team, coach Spence said he was happy to win that game in particular. “I want a clear lead,” he stated emphatically. Indeed, the victory put Rangers two points ahead of the second-placed teams, St Augustine and Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC), who are both on four points.

At Frederick Settlement in Caroni, 2015 Champions, St Augustine FC got their first victory against Club Sando. St Augustine were first on the score, via a Naomie Guerra goal in the 24th minute. Club Sando’s Elise Simon equalised in the 35th and they went in at the half tied at 1-1.

In the second half, St Augustine extended their lead with goals from national youth players Chevonne John (72’) and Laurel Theodore (76’), completing a 3-1 victory over Club Sando.

At Guaracara Park, QPCC got their first three points in the Super League with a 1-0 away result against Petrotrin. Ashley Alonzo got the lone item in the 87th minute.

And Central United scored their first win, edging St. Ann’s Rangers (B) 1-0, the lone goal coming from Allison Pivotte in the 63rd.
