Anique Walker netted a brace as the T&T under-17 women’s team whipped Adams Construction San Juan Jabloteh 3-1 to surge to the top of the Lucky Bakery-sponsored National Women’s Super League, at Barataria Oval on Saturday.
Jabloteh went into the top flight clash leaders of the nine-team table and scorers of an astonishing 55 goals. Lead scorer was national women’s team striker, former Sweden- and Australian-based Kenya “Yaya” Cordner of Tobago, with 20.
However, it was the under-17s who took an early lead when Khadidra Debessette opened the scoring in as early as the second minute. Both teams went into the half at 1-1 after Cordner netted for Jabloteh to set up an interesting second-half.
In the second half, the under-17 Soca Princesses who are preparing for their Caribbean Football Union qualifying tournament with St Kitts/Nevis and Dominica, went ahead for the second time in the match when Walker fired in from close range.
She then netted again to seal the 3-1 victory and with it, top spot on the table with 20 points. Third-placed Water One Real Dimension, five points adrift of the leaders, will hope to cut into that gap when it travels to North Coast United tomorrow. Following tomorrow’s match the league will take a break for the knockout tournament.
