T&T’s women’s football team, which was still missing some players through illness, drew 2-2 with Guatemala in their second friendly in Guatemala City on Monday.

The women Soca Warriors went into the match with 14 players and lost another player in Dernell Mascall who was red carded in the second half. The visitors which held a 2-1 lead at the half, got goals from Candace Edwards and Tasha St Louis (penalty), as they remained unbeaten after winning the first match 3-2.

The twin island team is preparing for upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup, and will come up against Canada, Guyana and host Mexico. Ayanna Russell, Katrina Meyer, Ana Prescott and Daniele Blair have all returned to their respective universities and will rejoin the team in Mexico. Captain Maylee Attin Johnson in summing up the two matches, said credit must go to her teammates for a gritty display against the Central Americans.

“I think the team showed a lot of grit under the unforeseen circumstances that we were put under with seven of our players going down sick the day of the first match,” Johnson said.

T&T faces Canada in their opening Gold Cup match in Cancun, Mexico, on October 29. Out of the eight-nation tournament, the winner and runner-up will advance to the 2011 Women’s World Cup Final in Germany. The third-place finisher will face the fifth-place team from Europe for an additional berth at the World Cup.
