Two late goals proved vital as Trinidad and Tobago overcame a plucky challenge from the Bahamas to prevail 3-1 at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna as the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Girls Under-15 Invitational tournament began yesterday.
Trinidad and Tobago broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through right- winger Kayla Taylor. Bahamas, with noticeably taller players got the equaliser in the 54th through substitute Lauren Haven.
The hosts restored their lead two minutes later when midfielder Jonelle Warrick lobbed her free-kick above the Bahamian keeper Courtney Treco, and Khadidra Debisette nudged the ball over the goal-line.
Debisette scored again in added time, this time from the penalty spot, after she was brought down by Felicia Taylor. Yesterday’s torrential midday showers forced the cancellation of the Group “B” contest between Jamaica and Aruba at the Queen’s Royal College Ground, Port of Spain. That match will be replayed today, at noon, at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
Also in Group “B”, the scheduled meeting between Haiti and Grenada, at the University of the West Indies Ground, St Augustine, was scrapped due to the late withdrawal from the competition by the Grenadians.
In related news, Barbados and Guyana played to a goalless draw at the Plymouth Recreation Ground yesterday in a re-arranged Group “B” Boys Under-16 contest. Due to Grenada’s pull-out, only those two (Barbados and Guyana) remain in the group, and both countries will face off again tomorrow.
